City Centres promote safe recycling of electronic waste

Recycle Your Gadget’ initiative with Red Crescent safely manages e-waste and donates to those in need.

Dubai, UAE – 27 October 2013 – City Centre Deira, Mirdif City Centre and Sharjah City Centre are helping to make the UAE a greener place by helping shoppers to safely dispose of their old electronics goods with their ‘Recycle Your Gadget’ campaign. According to Bee’ah, the first environmental and waste management company, 88% of smart phone users in the UAE have never recycled their phones. Moreover, globally more than 20-50 million tonnes of e-waste is accumulated every year with only 14% being recycled.

To encourage shoppers to recycle their electronics goods, the malls have installed specially marked bins collecting e-waste – old mobile phones, computers and other gadgets. All items will be given to the Red Crescent, and electronics in good condition will be reused and donated to those in needs, or otherwise parts will be sold and funds raised will be given back to the underprivileged.

To-date, hundreds of old electronics items have already been collected by City Centre Deira, Mirdif City Centre and Sharjah City Centre, for safe management and disposal rather than harming the environment.

The ‘Recycle Your Gadget’ initiative is part of City Centres’ electronics campaign running throughout the month of October where shoppers stand the chance to win daily Samsung Galaxy Note 3, or the Grand Prize of an 85” Samsung TV with a minimum spend.
